Wayfarer vs. Aviator: Which Shape Actually Suits You

Aviator and wayfarer are the two shapes every other silhouette gets compared to, and most people default to whichever one they already own without ever asking if it's actually the better fit. The two shapes solve different problems, which is why it's worth being deliberate about which one you reach for.

Aviators soften angles

The aviator's rounded, teardrop lens and thin double-bridge were designed to sit close to the face without a heavy brow line — which is exactly why it works so well on angular or square faces. It introduces curve where the face has none, without adding visual weight. On a face that already has soft, rounded features, an aviator can read as a bit shapeless; there's nothing for the frame to contrast against.

Some aviators add structure instead

Not every aviator is a soft curve. A structured, rimless square shape, like The Navigator, does a different job: it adds a strong horizontal line and defined corners. On rounder or softer faces, that structure is flattering — it gives the face an edge it doesn't naturally have. On an already-angular face, a heavy square frame can double down on the sharpness rather than balancing it.

The metal-frame exception

The Navigator complicates the usual "aviator means soft curves" assumption — it's a rimless, gold-tone metal build with a squared lens shape, which means it keeps the structural benefit of a squared silhouette without losing the light, metal-frame feel classic aviators are known for. It's a reasonable middle option if you're not sure which shape actually suits you, since it borrows from both.

Look at your jawline in a straight-on mirror, not a selfie camera, which distorts proportions. A visibly angular jaw generally pairs better with an aviator's curve. A rounder jaw generally pairs better with a wayfarer's structure. It's not a strict rule, but it's a better starting point than picking whatever's trending.
