How to Clean Sunglasses Without Scratching Them

Almost nobody cleans their sunglasses on purpose. You notice a smudge, grab whatever's closest — a t-shirt hem, a napkin, a tissue from your bag — and wipe. It works fine in the moment. It's also the single most common way lenses end up with that faint web of fine scratches that shows up when you hold them up to the sun.

The problem isn't the wiping, it's the dust

Lenses don't usually get scratched by the cloth itself. They get scratched by the dust and grit that's already sitting on the lens when you wipe it — you're basically dragging sandpaper across the surface, just very fine sandpaper. That's why a rinse under water before wiping makes a bigger difference than the cloth you use. It clears the grit off before anything touches the lens directly.

What to actually use

Rinse the lenses with water first, if you can. Then dry them with a proper microfiber cloth — the kind that comes with every pair of Corvelle sunglasses — using light pressure, not scrubbing. If there's something sticky or oily on the lens, a drop of dish soap in the rinse water cuts through it without needing to press harder.

Skip paper towels, tissues, and your shirt, even when the cloth isn't handy. Paper products are more abrasive than they feel, and cotton shirts collect enough dust over a day of wear that they're not much better. If you genuinely don't have the cloth, blowing loose dust off first helps more than switching fabrics.

The frame needs less than you think

The frame doesn't need conditioning or special treatment. Heat is the main thing to avoid — leaving them on a car dashboard or a hot windowsill can warp the shape or dull the finish over time. Store them in the case when you're not wearing them, mostly to protect them from being sat on.
